The dire situation with North Korea
North Korea's July 4th launch/test of an intercontinental ballistic missile further endangers peace and safety in Asia and in the U.S. The situation is now critical.
All the pundits keep stating that we need China to intervene with North Korea and that nothing will be accomplished without Chinese intervention. But what possible incentive does China have for resolving the tensions created by Kim Jong-un? As far as I can see, Xi Jinping is sitting back enjoying these tensions created by Kim with the USA, with a huge smile on his face The pudgy little guy has thrown the big guy off balance. Is Xi Jinping interested in humanitarian ideals? Is he interested in world peace? Is he interested in achieving a Nobel Peace Prize by resolving this situation? NO! He cares nothing about these things. The only thing Xi really cares about is keeping the United States far away from mainland Asia and furthering his own goal of Chinese world domination. It irritates Xi Jinping that the USA has a foothold in South Korea. He would simply be thrilled if it were possible for North Korea to invade and/or obliterate capitalist South Korea if the end result was removing American presence from the Korean peninsula. What possible incentive can we provide China to act in behalf of OUR interests? Even if we were to sanction China economically, as some Washington politicians have suggested, China will easily find a way around those sanctions and continue business as usual.
No, as I see it the one and only reason Xi Jinping would ever act to quell the fires created by Kim Jong-un is if Xi became convinced the USA was going to invade North Korea. Then he would be faced with the mighty U.S. military sitting on China’s borders, not North Korea’s southern border. He would never want that. That would be the exact opposite of his main objective of ridding Asia of American presence. But for the U.S. to invade North Korea would be the U.S. inviting nuclear war. It simply is not going to happen. Even with Donald Trump threatening serious consequences, Trump's advisors would never let it come to that.
So, we are lost. North Korea will continue to develop its nuclear capabilities. North Korea will develop the capacity to obliterate Alaska, or Hawaii, or the American West Coast, or threaten the integrity and safety of South Korea and Japan and the U.S. Navy in Asia. That is the reality of the situation. It is a new game. It will be costly to the United States but we will have to prepare for a world in which the hostile leaders of North Korea, like those in Iran, are ready to obliterate us with their nuclear weapons.
